FEAR

OF

"FOREIGNERS"

(Teach the Teachers 2000 -a work in progress)

Let's look at Franklin High School.

Does it look like a friendly school? What can you tell about the school without looking at the students?

Look closely at some Franklin students over the years.

(insert student pictures)

From your observation, how does Franklin represent America?

Introduction/Rationale

Several years ago the Franklin High ASB developed a Day of Understanding. All students and staff participated. For some, the Day of Understanding turned out to be more divisive than bringing students and staff together.

Technology is available to increase our knowledge and understanding of other cultures in innovative and exciting ways.

What do you think we could do to bring about a better communication between staff and students?

Think about ideas that are REALLY doable (that could really happen).  Offer specific detail.

One method that has worked to open effective communication is consensus building.

How many of you have participated in activities to increase effective communication in school, community, etc.?

Describe those activities in specific details.

How have you used those activities to increase communication? Can clubs at Franklin be a forum to help bring about better communication between groups of learners? Why or why not?

In our study of world cultures, throughout our project, we will integrate technology. Technology will be used as another tool to increase our knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

With the integration of technology, the process is interactive and exciting! We will explore ways to learn effective communication skills through real-life situations.

We will use your ideas from past experiences. We will also explore project ideas that we developed this summer in Teach the Teachers Institute 2000.

Franklin in just a smaller version, microcosm of the larger world.  From time to time American citizens have become fearful  of "others", the "foreigners". . .

How does this fear affect open communication?

In what ways can we address the fears and bring about more open, global communication?

This fear of the actions of other nations can affect international relations.  You are going to examine a 'real' situation on an international level.

Before we start this project, think about this Chinese proverb. IT is often used by educators to express how learning happens. What does it mean to you? Explain.

Proverb Example
Tell me, I forget. Mother to child: "I've told you twenty time to clean your room, take out garbage, get off the telephone.  Add your own examples to this list.
Show me, I remember. Teacher to student: Where will I find answers to these questions. Resources include: encyclopedias, wall maps, graphs, library resources etc. Add your own resources.
Involve me, I understand. Use of resources involves  active participation in "doing" to explore and discover.Offer other examples of active learning.

When you do these things you are actively involved with your learning.

What can we do to maximize our learning?

WebQuest is a resource.  Post it.

Project Idea Formulation involves brainstorming.  Consensus building is a life skill.

Storyboarding:  Frame or model of getting from the idea to a conclusion, moral, or learning.  Most students.

Goal: to examine different points of view on a issue.

Learning is not linear.
