How to Use Your Plant/Tree
The survival of your tribal community and the new settlers are dependent upon safe and effective use of plants in the forest. In this activity it is important that you be able to teach others to distinguish your plant from all the others in the forest so it is used correctly. Your group of four will need to investigate and teach one forest plant/tree from the forest floor, shrubs, smaller trees, or canopy. You will be doing a project in one of two ways: an electronic presentation or a mural accompanied with a written report. You and your project partner will give an oral presentation of your project to the class. . You must include these things in your project.
1. The common name and botanical name of your plant.
2. The tree type, coniferous, broadleaf evergreen, deciduous.
3. Level of the forest in which your tree/plant grows.
4. Describe the leaves, bark, seeds, seed distribution, and growth habit of your plant.
5. Describe and make a replica of your tribe’s use of your plant. If one or more members of your group have no known use for their plant they are to make a replica of a teammate’s plant that has multiple uses.
6. Use at least three references, including a minimum of one electronic source- internet or the class Encarta CD ROM encyclopedia.
7. Keep a journal of all your research findings and remember to cite your references
Electronic presentations may be done in HyperStudio, Kid Pix, or Power Point. You will be working in pairs on this presentation. It must include these features.
1. A photograph, either digital or scanned, of the plant/tree.
2. Navigable buttons, appropriate backgrounds, graphics, and readable, edited text.
3. Title slide that contains the name of the slide show.
4. Three to five content slides that describe the trees/plants your group studied.
5. An author slide that tells a little about the members in your group along with digital photos of each member.
6. Bibliography slide that properly lists the resources used.
Two group members will make replicas of the groups’ plants for a class wall mural and will write their research findings and post these with the wall mural. Project requirements include:
1. The plant or tree replica may be made of butcher or construction paper, or another material approved by the teacher.
2. Plant or tree must be made in proportion for size of plant to the mural space.
3. Plant or tree replica must accurate.
4. Written report must include all elements of assigned research.
5. The report must be typed.
