Why study Africa?

Africa is an unexplored and unstudied continent for many of us in the United States.  Our lack of knowledge has made many students make incorrect statements about the land and people of African countries.  Your assigned country is unknown to most of the 6th grade students in your class.  By becoming an expert in the 5 themes of geography as they apply to your country you will be able to inform some of these students about the unknown Africa. You will be working as a group of two or three students to research Africa. In particular, you will be focusing your attention on your assigned country.

Five Themes of Geography

Keep these key questions from the themes of geography in mind as you explore informative sites and sources:

Location -- Where are things located? A location can be specific (e.g., it can be written as coordinates of longitude and latitude or as a distance from another place) or general (it's in the Northeast).

Place -- What makes a place different from other places? Differences might be defined in terms of climate, physical features (mountains, deserts, what kind of land?), or the people who live there and their traditions (differences or sameness).

Human/environment interaction -- What are the relationships among people and places? How have people changed the environment to better suit their needs?

Movement -- What are the patterns of movement of people, products, and information? A study of movement includes learning about major modes of transportation used by people, an area's major exports (what products your country makes or grows) and imports (what products or items that your country needs form other countries), and ways in which people communicate (move ideas).

Regions -- How can Africa be divided into regions for study? Regions  can be defined by a number of characteristics including area, language, political divisions, religions, and vegetation (e.g., grassland, marshland, desert, rain forest). How does your country fit into a particular region?
