Analyzing Data with a Geographic Information System (GIS)
![]()
It is often difficult for students to visualize relationships between sets of data in traditional formats like graphs and charts. Geographic information systems allow teachers and students to attach data to maps and clearly see the relationships between data like population density and the location of bodies of water. In this class, participants will view and discuss examples of GIS and how they can be used in the classroom. This discussion will lead to hands-on activities using the basic components of Arc View, the most commonly used GIS program.
Outcomes:
· Understand what a GIS is
· Use Arc View GIS program to analyze geographic relationships between
preformatted data
· Use Arc View to create maps
· Input an analyze data in an Arc View database
Projects:
· Create and plan for using GIS software to analyze geographic data
